Action calls for immediate release of Eynulla Fatullayev

Journalists, spurred on by an appeal from Amnesty International, have begun a mass twitter action, asking for Azerbaijani newspaper editor to be freed from prison.

Eynulla Fatullayev has been imprisoned since 2007 on dubious charges such as defamation, terrorism and incitement to ethnic hatred. A European Court of Human Rights judgement in April of 2010 quaffed many of these charges and ordered his immediate release.

Despite this ruling, Mr. Fatullayev is still behind bars on fresh charges for possession of drugs and on 1 Feb 2011 his appeal against the charges was rejected.

Amnesty International believe Mr. Fatullayev is a prisoner of conscience and last night urged journalists to call for his immediate release, an action led by broadcaster Jon Snow.
