A pod of more than 60 whales which were at risk of beaching in the Western Isles are attempting to swim south. Marine experts warned that the whales which had left Loch Carnan, South Uist, were “hugging” the coastline.
The plight of the pod was flagged up on Thursday afternoon and the concern was that they could die in a mass stranding.
The Scottish government has sent marine protection vessel Hirta to monitor the pod’s movements.
