Commission seek views on referendum question

The Electoral Commission are seeking the views of ordinary people on the proposed referendum question on Scottish independence.
Following a request from the Scottish Government, the Commission has begun to assess the intelligibility of the question.

The question they have been asked to assess is: “Do you agree that Scotland should be an independent country?”

As part of their process the Commission will talk to voters across Scotland to see whether they can easily understand and answer the question on the ballot paper.  They will also ask for advice from accessibility and plain language specialists as well as prospective campaigners, politicians, academics and other interested people for their views on the question.

If you wish to give your views please e-mail them to by November 30 at the latest.

Respondents are asked to include ‘referendum question’ in the subject line of their email.
