The SNP have expressed concerns over the power cuts at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary (ERI) which led to a surgeon at the hospital having to complete an operation by torchlight, after people operating under a PFI contract switched off the lights.
Jim Eadie, Health and Sport Committee member and SNP MSP for Edinburgh Southern, said:
“I am appalled at this situation, which should never have been allowed to happen under any circumstances.
“This is a damning indictment of PFI contacts foisted upon hospitals in Scotland by previous Labour and Tory administrations, even before the Scottish Parliament came into being.
“This is what happens when you put buildings and profit before patient care.
“NHS Lothian must conduct a full investigation into how this unacceptable situation was allowed to come about.
“Lessons must be learned to ensure that this never ever happens again.”
