Earthquake hits Spain

At least ten people have been killed after a magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck Southern Spain, near the town of Lorca.

Striking at a depth of just 1km, according to the US Geological Survey, the quake toppled several buildings and led to the precautionary evacuation of others.

Spanish news agency Efe has reported that Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has mobilised military units to the area.

It remains unclear how many were injured in the event, but Spanish media say dozens.

There are fears the death toll could rise after multiple aftershocks were felt.
