SNP Aberdeen Donside candidate Mark McDonald has welcomed an endorsement from actress Elaine C Smith, who is a firm favourite of audiences at His Majesty’s Theatre in Aberdeen.

A special leaflet including Elaine’s endorsement is being distributed across the constituency during the last few days of the campaign.

Backing Mark McDonald, Elaine said:

“I’ve had the privilege of performing in Aberdeen for many years now. The kindness and generosity and warmth of the audiences – especially at panto time in HMT – has touched me greatly, but I’ve enjoyed getting to know the people and their city more than anything else.

“Aberdonians rightly want the best for their city – it offers huge opportunities for all of Scotland but it also has its share of problems. Donside needs an MSP who will champion its interests at every turn, and the SNP have a track record of delivery for Aberdeen – four new schools in Donside, the massive emergency care centre at Foresterhill, a new state-of-the-art dental hospital, a world-class Sports Village, and cash for the bypass and Haudagain.

“I know that Mark delivers. For example, he has successfully campaigned for special performances in cinemas and theatres for people with autism and other complex support needs, and I was personally delighted to read that there will be an autism-friendly performance of this year’s panto at HMT.

“Mark is rooted in the local community. He resigned his seat in the Scottish Parliament to stand in this by-election because he is passionate about being the next MSP for Aberdeen Donside, so that he can take forward and build on the late Brian Adam’s legacy. Mark is the right person for Donside, and I urge you to give him your vote on Thursday.”

Ms Smith’s backing follows a string of endorsements from both inside and outside politics during the campaign. Mr McDonald has received the backing from former Labour Councillor Norman Collie and former Lib Dem Councillor George Penny, as well as Dons legend Joe Harper, and the ‘Aberdeen Assassin’ boxer Lee McAllister.

Welcoming the endorsement of Elaine C Smith, Mr McDonald said:

“I’ve always been a huge fan of Elaine C Smith, so to have secured her support in the by-election means a lot to me.

“It is a very welcome vote of confidence in the SNP’s record of delivery in Aberdeen, and I am immensely touched that she has given me her backing.

“Securing an autism-friendly panto performance at His Majesty’s Theatre is something I’m proud to have achieved and it’s good to know that the move has been well received across Aberdeen and beyond.

“Elaine has a huge following in Aberdeen from the performances she has put on in the city over the years, so to have the support of such a much-loved performer is fantastic.”
