Explosion rocks French nuclear plant

A blast at a nuclear plant has killed at least one person and injured four others according to media reports.

The explosion happened at the Marcoule plant which is located near the city of Nimes in the south of France after a fire broke out in a radioactive waste storage site.

Initial reports suggested there was a risk of a radioactive leak, however French officials have denied this and described the accident as ‘industrial’ as opposed to ‘nuclear’.

Part of the site is used by French nuclear giant Areva to produce MOX fuel used to recycle plutonium for nuclear weapons.
