A spectacular meteor fireball has sent twitter alight after being seen over the skies of Scotland and the north of England.
The display happened at around 9:30 pm on Saturday evening as the huge meteor entered the earth’s atmosphere and blazed a trail across the night sky.
Witnesses described the sight as looking like a plane on fire, however authorities confirmed that no incidents of aircraft in trouble were reported.
The phenomenon was explained by experts as almost certainly a piece of space debris that that entered the earth’s atmosphere burning up, forming a fireball.
Professor David Whitehouse, an astronomer, told the BBC. “When you see this fireball breaking up, you’re seeing the wreckage of a planet that couldn’t form properly when the solar system was young and a bit of rock that has been orbiting the sun for perhaps thousands of millions of years.”
