Commenting on Andy Murray’s semi-final win in the Australian Open, First Minister Alex Salmond said:

“Andy has produced another outstanding performance in reaching the final of the Australian Open. The semi-final was an absolutely thrilling contest and, with an opponent like Roger Federer, it was never going to be anything other than hard-fought.

“I’m quite certain I will not be the only Scot glued to the television to see Andy take on Novak Djokovic in the final on Sunday. The whole country will be behind him and willing him on to take his second Grand Slam title.”

It was the first time Murray had defeated Roger Federer in a grand slam event.  He beat the Swiss legend over five sets, winning 6-4, 6-7, 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 to set up a show-down with Djokovic who defeated Murray in an epic semi-final last year.

If he wins on Sunday, the Scot will complete a hatrick of consecutive five-set final wins by adding to his Olympic Gold medal and his US Open title.
