How might the Queen spend her £709k Derby winnings?

by Alan Barbour

THE QUEEN will scoop £709,625 in prize money if her horse, Carlton House, wins the Derby at Epsom this Saturday.

And she’s got every reason to start window shopping as bookies Ladbrokes make the horse their hot 7/4 favourite despite last minute doubts over the horse’s participation.

The prize money would be enough to buy Kate Middleton’s famous wedding dress 18 times, or it could allow her to bag four Aston Martin DB5s, the car driven by Prince William at the Royal Wedding.

If she wanted to celebrate the win immediately she could buy a bottle of Champagne for everyone in the crowd and still have over £250k left – enough to cover the money the Middleton family reportedly spent on their daughter’s wedding.
Punters and bookies alike are also sweating on Carlton House’s participation with the horse responsible for 75% of bets in the race so far. If the horse justifies favouritism Ladbrokes will be left with a multi-million pound payout.

Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: “Carlton House could still become the best backed Derby horse we’ve seen in living memory. The country is still basking in a wave of royal fever and the hopes of a nation are now resting with the Queen’s big race favourite.

he added: “Her Majesty may well start wondering what to do with all the money but we can’t see her heading to the champagne bar to celebrate.”
