Commenting on the UCAS figures which show an increase of 3.1 per cent in the number of Scottish applicants accepted to our universities, Education Secretary Michael Russell said:
“School pupils across Scotland have achieved the best exam results ever this year. As part of our promise to keep university free for Scottish students, the Scottish Government committed to protecting the number of university places.
“We have done exactly that. Indeed, this year there has been an increase of nearly 700 students accepted to our universities based on these outstanding achievements.
“Of course, we are not just protecting pupils who go to university. We have committed to ensuring that every young person aged between 16 and 19 year old leaving school will be offered a place in work, training or education.
“Every single young person in Scotland receiving their exam results today will be offered help, support and a place in work or education.”
