Former Labour MP Dennis Canavan has caused anger within Labour party ranks after he came out in support of the SNP candidate in Falkirk.
Mr Canavan is urging voters to reject Labour’s Eric Joyce and instead opt for change by voting for the SNP’s John McNally.
It is understood that Mr Canavan’s statement has angered many Labour party members. Labour candidate Eric Joyce is pleading with voters to stick with him.
Mr Joyce hit the headline recently after his huge expense claims were made public.
Mr Canavan said of the Labour candidate:
“He has hit the headlines several times as Britain’s most expensive MP – but are you getting value for money?”
He added: “Surely the people of Falkirk constituency deserve better. Now is the time for change.”
The respected former Labour MP went on:
“The MPs’ expenses scandal has sadly brought the UK Parliament into disrepute. There is a stench of corruption hanging over the House of Commons and this election gives you, the people, the chance to clean out the Westminster stables.”
He continues “I have known John McNally for many years. When I was in Parliament, I had a good working relationship with him, as a local councillor. John is an honest man, some-one you can trust. If you elect him as your MP, he will work hard on your behalf. That is why I think he is worthy of your support.”
Thanking Mr Canavan for his endorsement SNP candidate John McNally said:
“I would like to thank Dennis Canavan for his warm words and best wishes. This election is a chance for people in Falkirk to clean up Westminster and I hope, to elect me as their local champion.
“Dennis Canavan always put the people of Falkirk first. That is what I have always sought to do as a Cllr and will continue to do in Westminster to live up to the expectations of the people of Falkirk and the standards set by Dennis Canavan.”
