A Labour councillor has been accused of illegally claiming almost £45,000 in benefits.

Councillor John Holden faces charges that between October 2001 and August 2008 he claimed benefits to which he was not entitled.

A Labour councillor has been accused of illegally claiming almost £45,000 in benefits.

Councillor John Holden faces charges that between October 2001 and August 2008 he claimed benefits to which he was not entitled.

The Labour councillor is said to have pocketed £34,000 in Income Support, £6000 in Council Tax benefit and a Single Occupancy Discount of £2000 over the seven year period.

Holden was charged following a lengthy investigation.  He made no plea at Inverness Sheriff Court on Thursday, his case will be heard again on September 23rd.

Meanwhile

A senior Lib Dem councillor and his wife have been charged over an alleged 11 year cash swindle.

Aberdeen councillor Scott Cassie has appeared in court alongside his wife Moira accused of embezzling money.

The charges follow a police investigation into allegations of financial mismanagement at Garthlee Community Council where 60 year old Mr Cassie was once a Community Leader.
