First Minister Alex Salmond hit the US chat show circuit when he appeared as a guest on The Late, Late Show.
Hosted by ex-pat Scot Craig Ferguson, Mr Salmond fielded questions on Scottish history and his goal of independence … against the backdrop of the Arbroath Abbey ruins.

First Minister Alex Salmond hit the US chat show circuit when he appeared as a guest on The Late, Late Show.
Hosted by ex-pat Scot Craig Ferguson, Mr Salmond fielded questions on Scottish history and his goal of independence … against the backdrop of the Arbroath Abbey ruins.
The Abbey was the location for the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath, the document that many believe secured Scotland’s status as an independent country.
In the interview the First Minister speaks of Scotland’s natural resources, including water – joking about our rainfall, Mr Salmond quotes Sean Connery who said the only thing Scotland lacked was a good roof.
The relaxed interview saw the First Minister use the opportunity in order to promote Scotland’s attractions and benefits to the two million Americans who regularly watch Ferguson’s show.
Having the First Minister as a guest was part of a Scottish theme for Ferguson who, born in Glasgow in 1962 and brought up in Cumbernauld, took up American citizenship in 2008. He has become a bit of a sensation in the US since taking the talk show over in 2005 and is widely tipped to eventually take over from David Letterman.
