Local MSP welcomes sale of Edinburgh airport

SNP MSP Colin Keir has welcomed the sale of Edinburgh Airport to Global Infrastructure Partnership.

Mr Keir, whose constituency Edinburgh Western covers the airport, has spoken to representatives of GIP.

He said: “This is a welcome announcement and ends uncertainty on the future of the airport.

“I appreciate GIP’s commitment to Edinburgh airport and its future success.

“Following discussions with GIP I’m delighted to see their commitment to more direct routes out of Edinburgh and constantly improving passenger services.

“Edinburgh Airport has a fantastic reputation – it’s Scotland’s busiest airport with almost 10 million passengers per year.

“It is an award-winning airport – in 2011 it was voted the best airport in Europe in the 5 to 10 million passengers category and previously voted the second best airport in Europe for customer service.

“The sale of the airport will increase competition and I believe this will be reflected in passenger numbers using the airport in years to come.

“This is good news for the city, business and all passengers using the airport.

“I have agreed to meet with GIP and look forward to hearing in more detail what their plans are for the future success of Edinburgh airport.”

The deal is reported to be worth £800 million.
