Madrid protestors defy ban

Thousands of people defied the ban implemented by the authorities in Madrid prohibiting assembly in la Puerta Del Sol on Wednesday night by battling through the rain to demonstrate in the famed city square.

After an initial wave of protests in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Granada, Murcia and other cities and towns across Spain on the 15th of May – the demonstrators have sought to take control of Puerta Del Sol, hoping to repeat the success of peaceful people power as seen by the occupation of Tahrir Square in Egypt.

The protestors, who are not affiliated with any mainstream political party are calling for an end to two-party politics and real democracy.

El Pais newspaper described a sense of ‘indignation’ in the air and thought it unlikely that the protests, happening across the country, would disappear before Sunday, which is a day of local elections.
