Moray MP and MSP comment on Tornado crash

The MP and MSP for Moray have responded to news today that two Tornado GR4 aircraft have crashed in the Moray Firth.

The planes each have a crew of two, and were from RAF Lossiemouth, on the Moray coast.  Two pilots were rescued and taken to Raigmore hospital in Inverness, two others are still missing.

Angus Robertson MP, the SNP Westminster leader and Defence spokesperson, said:

“My first thoughts are with the crew, their families and colleagues.  Everyone in Moray has a connection with the RAF and this incident will be felt right across the community.

“The priority must now be for the support of the affected families and for the authorities to investigate the causes of this incident and ensure the future safety of flying operations and personnel.”

Moray MSP Richard Lochhead said:

“The loss of two our local RAF Tornados is a big shock for the local community even if there is always at the back of everyone’s minds the knowledge that such incidents do happen given the nature of the training exercises undertaken in our skies to keep the crews in operational readiness.

“The thoughts of everyone in the local community will be with the crews, their families and their colleagues at RAF Lossiemouth.”
