An Australian supermarket chain is at the centre of a social media storm after an advert appeared in a local newspaper asking for staff, but “no Asians or Indians”.
The ad appeared on online ad network Gumtree and read “Store requires no Indians or Asians please. Must speak English”.
It was placed by a contractor working for Australian supermarket chain Coles.
The ad for cleaners at the chain’s Hobart premises sparked outrage as people called for a boycott of the Coles.
A Coles’ spokesman yesterday explained that the ad had been posted by a contract company responsible for cleaning its Rosny store but that the contractor was no longer employed.
“The ad was placed without Coles’ knowledge and we were extremely concerned to learn of the ad and its contents,” spokesman Jim Cooper said.
Tasmania’s Anti-Discrimination Commissioner Robin Banks was quoted as saying that she wanted to track down the cleaning contractor to pursue possible legal action and claimed that the publisher, Gumtree, could also face prosecution.
“It’s unlawful to blanket preclude a person because of their race,”
