Officer to face manslaughter charges over G20 death

PC Simon Harwood is to face manslaughter charges after striking newspaper vendor Ian Tomlinson with a baton during the 2009 G20 demonstrations.

The decision to prosecute Harwood was announced at the office of the Crown Prosecution Service, shortly after Tomlinson’s family were personally informed.

Jenny Jones, member of the Metropolitan Police Authority, said:

“”I am glad that this case is finally being taken to court. It’s really the only way that the family of Ian Tomlinson will find any sense of justice. The police have to know that unnecessarily violent behaviour cannot go unpunished.”
