The head of the Press Complaints Commission, Baroness Peta Buscombe, has announced her intention to resign from the watchdog.
The news follows growing criticism of the commission’s handling of the phone hacking scandal which has engulfed the UK newspaper industry and led to the closure of the News of the World.
Baroness Buscombe, 57, is a former lawyer and chief executive of the Advertising Association. She received her peerage in 1998 and is also a former Tory frontbench spokeswoman.
A formal announcement of her resignation is expected soon.
