SNP MSP Michael Matheson has expressed sorrow at the loss of 100 jobs following the news that the makers of iconic brand Highland Toffee have ceased trading.
Production at the New McCowans confectionary plant in Stenhousemuir was suspended in September after the firm went into administration.
Despite initial hopes that immediate investment would prevent closure the administrators have been unable to find a rescue for the plant.
Mr Matheson said: “McCowans is iconic, it is one of Scotland’s best known and well recognised brands and it is sad to see it close. These will be difficult times for staff and their families and everyone who was connected with the McCowans plant.”
“It is also a sad day for everyone down the years who has enjoyed the delicious sweets that were made in the factory. Whilst McCowans may be closing now, I hope another company will see the opportunity to take on this inconic Scottish brand.”
