Second Shawlands Mela festival announced

Shawlands Academy Parent Teacher Council is staging the 2nd Annual Shawlands Academy Mela, Scotland first and largest school-based Mela that last year drew 2,000 people to Shawlands and Shawlands Academy.

Shawlands Mela is an exciting event, a day to celebrate many cultures through entertainment, shopping, food and other fun activities and will be held in Shawlands Academy on Saturday 16 March 2013 (between 10am and 3pm).

The Shawlands (Academy) Mela will be well-advertised throughout Glasgow to the hundreds of families of different cultures in the Shawlands Academy school community. The Mela will feature additional attractions to pull in the crowds including entertainment and food and we are confident it will attract a large and varied crowd throughout the day.  For example, we will have face-painting, henna hand designs and a bouncy castle to cater for young kids.

The Mela will be held in the Academy’s large school hall, and in the school’s social area. Due to its huge success in 2012, all available stalls are fully booked and we have people who would like to have a stall on the reserve list.  This is before we have even started to advertise the event.

Entrance charge is £1 per adult and 50p per child, payable on admission.  All income from admission fees and stall rentals will be used by Shawlands Academy PTC for the benefit of the school community.

The PTC sees the Mela as an exciting addition to the events held in Shawlands Academy and a welcome addition to events held at this time of year in the Glasgow’s cosmopolitan South Side; through various entertainment people will get to learn other cultures.

At the 2012 Shawlands Mela entertainment included: Irish Dancing, Gaelic music, Glasgow Street Dance, Urdu singing, Indian Bhangra and unaccompanied Arabicsinging as well as gymnastic displays from Shawlands Academy’s award-winning dance gymnasts. And the 2013 Mela we be even better.
