The Mela is a traditional south Asian festival where members of the local community gather together.  In recent times it has become a popular way to refer to fairs or shows where the local community gather in a celebration of food, arts, dance and general entertainment.

Shawlands Mela will be open to everyone and this exciting multicultural event will see music, dance, entertainment and food available this Saturday from 10am to 3pm.

“It will be well advertised throughout Glasgow, particularly within the Asian community, as well as to the many families of different cultures in our school community.  We plan to advertise through local radio press and leaflet distribution.” said organiser Tahir Mohammed.

Speaking to Newsnet Scotland, Mr Mohammed explained that leaflets have been distributed door to door and in many local primary schools.

“It’s going to be a great day and we are looking forward to seeing families from all across the community having a great time.

“Response to the leaflets has been fantastic, especially amongst local primary schools.  There is also the opportunity for businesses to hire a stall for the full five hours of the event if they get in touch.” he said.

Organisers have laid on face painting and bouncy castles as well as the intricate henna hand designs.  There will also be a variety of food and music from different cultures.  People attending will pay a small admission fee (£1).

Organisers have made available fifty stalls for individuals and businesses.  A handful are still available for a very reasonable charge of £35.00 for each stall.

The admission fees and stall rental taken at the event will go towards the Parent Teacher Council of Shawlands Academy and will benefit the school community.

This is the first multicultural event organised by Shawlands Academy and provides an opportunity to learn about different cultures through a variety of traditional entertainment as well as food, jewellery, clothing from different continents.

Tahir told Newsnet Scotland: “We see this as an exciting addition to the variety of events held at this time of year in the South Side, and indeed hope that it may become an annual event.”
