The former editor of the Scottish News of the World has been arrested and charged with perjury.
The charge relates to evidence Douglas Wight, 39, gave at the perjury trial of former Scottish Socialist leader Tommy Sheridan.
According to Strathclyde police, Wright has been charged with perjury, conspiracy to hack telephones and multiple charges of conspiracy to obtain personal data.
The arrest is part of Operation Rubicon, the Scottish police investigation into phone hacking.
A spokesman for Strathclyde Police said: “Officers of Operation Rubicon of Strathclyde Police arrested and charged an 39-year-old male with perjury before the High Court in Glasgow during the trial in 2010 (for perjury) of Tommy Sheridan, the former MSP, conspiracy (in Scotland) to hack telephones (Contraventions of Section 1 of the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000), multiple charges of Conspiracy to obtain the personal data of members of the public in breach of the Data Protection Acts and individual offences under these Acts.
“A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal at Glasgow in due course.
“Proceedings are now active and it would be inappropriate to comment further.”
Mr Wright becomes the second former editor of the News International former paper to be arrested following evidence they gave to the Tommy Sheridan trial jury.
In May, former aide to David Cameron, Andy Coulson was arrested and charged with perjury relating to evidence he gave at Mr Sheridan’s trial.
