SNP MEP Alyn Smith, who has been a vocal campaigner for equal marriage rights, has welcomed today’s announcement that the Scottish Government plans to bring forward legislation to allow these relationships in Scotland.
Mr Smith said: “I’m absolutely delighted that the Scottish Government is proposing to legislate to allow equal marriage. It brings us into line with a host of other countries in Europe and further afield where such ceremonies are now commonplace.
“This is about far, far more than LGBT rights, important though these are. It’s all part of building a new and distinctive Scotland – one which is tolerant, open and progressive and above all values the rights and liberties of the individual.
“Of course, those rights also extend to individuals with deeply-held religious convictions. Freedom of conscience is as important as equality and no-one will be asked or required to perform equal marriages against their will.
“I’m proud of Scotland today. This decision is a major step forward in leaving division and mistrust behind and looking to a brighter future where we see the best in each other.”
