The SPL has demanded Hearts Football Club pay all wages owed to the club’s first team players, plus interest, within seven days.
The club has also been ordered to ensure the players January wages are paid in full and on time.
According to media reports a failure to comply with the wishes of the governing body will see the club face unspecified sanctions.
The threat follows a move by Union PFA Scotland who submitted a formal complaint to the SPL on behalf of the Hearts first-team squad on 16 December, after wages were delayed for the third month in a row.
The problem over wages has led to midfielder Ryan Stevenson insisting he will not play again for Hearts until the situation is resolved.
