Spotify, the popular online music platform, is to half the amount of music it’s free service provides.

The changes, which come into effect from the 1st of May, were announced as the company looks to expand and improve its relationship with the record industry.

New users will still benefit from the free service as it stands for their first six months, a facility which allows them to stream music interrupted by occasional adverts.

Currently the company has 6.67 million users although only one million of them are paying subscribers.

The reaction to the announcement has not been positive so far, with many fans feeling betrayed by the decision to change the business model so readily.

But Spotify countered that the move will mainly effect heavier users, who would ultimately benefit from the paid service.{jcomments on}
