First Minister Alex Salmond issued a St Andrew’s Day message today, ahead of celebrations across the country to mark Scotland’s national day.

Filmed at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh – which will reopen to the public after an ambitious £17.6 million restoration project on December 1 – the message gives the First Minister the opportunity to reflect on Scotland’s great contributions to the world.

In the film, the First Minister sends his warmest wishes to Scots and Scots at heart and extends a warm invite to the world to visit Scotland and join in our Winter Festival Celebrations, which runs from St Andrew’s Day through to Christmas and Hogmanay, then right through to Burns Night at the end of January. 

Celebrations for St Andrew’s Day herald the start of Scotland’s Winter Festivals which culminate with Burns’ Night on January 25.

Historic Scotland and the Association of Scottish Visitor Attractions are offering free access for two adults and up to three children to 42 historically fascinating sites this weekend (November 26 and 27).

A free iPhone and Android app is available from Scotland.org to allow searches for events in Scotland and to find out what is happening across the rest of the world to celebrate Scotland’s national day.
