A short-lived tornado has struck New Zealand’s largest city, collapsing roofs and upturning cars.
It is thought to have touched down in Albany, a suburb of the city, before continuing through Birkenhead.
A spokesman for the North Shore Hospital said one person had been killed and at least 20 injured.
Speaking about the incident, New Zealand Prime Minister – John Key said:
“Obviously it’s been a very powerful and quite devastating tornado that’s caused a significant amount of damage in a very localised area.”
The Government is monitoring the situation, he said.
