Victory for Scottish pleural plaques sufferers

The Court of Session has rejected an appeal by the insurance industry to overturn a law which gives victims of an asbestos-related illness the right to claim damages.

The SNP Government brought forward legislation to reverse the impact of a House of Lords ruling on pleural plaques. The Damages (Asbestos-related Conditions) (Scotland) Act was passed in 2009.

Welcoming today’s decision, the SNP candidate for Greenock and Inverclyde, Stuart McMillan, said: “The SNP Government acted swiftly to address the injustice faced by pleural plaque sufferers.

“The decision of the House of Lords was outrageous and I am pleased that action was taken by the Justice Secretary to ensure that the ruling has no affect in Scotland.”{jcomments on}
