The SNP secured Scotland’s final council by-election success before the 2012 local government elections with the election of John Menzies as Councillor for Hamilton West and Earnock.

Cllr Menzies who is a community psychiatric nurse secured 50% of the Vote to Labour’s 37% – winning on first preferences.  The seat was previously held by an independent councillor.

Congratulating Cllr Menzies on his success local SNP MSP for Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse Christina McKelvie said:

“John has fought a hard campaign and I know he will be an excellent councillor for Hamilton West and Earnock.

“Today was not the weather for a by-election and full credit goes to all those who made it to the polling stations to vote and who worked hard to ensure the by-election went ahead.

“This was Scotland’s last council by-election before the local elections in May and I’m confident that as people have backed the SNP today with continued hard work they will back the SNP to take Scotland forward in May.”

Newly elected Cllr John Menzies said:

“I am honoured to have been elected and to have done so with the support of over half of the vote. I am looking forward to getting down to work in the community and in the council for the people of South Lanarkshire.”
